What Causes Burnout?

Today I’m going to talk about what causes burnout - are you at risk?

Burnout comes from a combination of work, lifestyle, and personal causes.

Work factors contributing to burnout:

  • Lack of control over your work conditions

  • Lack of recognition for your good work

  • Unclear or overly demanding job expectations

  • Doing work that’s monotonous or doesn’t challenge you

  • Time pressure

  • Chaotic workplace

  • Lack of alignment of values (around mission, purpose, and compensation) between you and your leadership

Lifestyle factors contributing to burnout:

  • Not having close, supportive relationships

  • Not taking time for socializing, relaxing, or self care

  • Too many responsibilities at home without enough help from others

  • Not getting enough sleep

Personal causes or burnout:

  • Perfectionism

  • High-achieving, Type A personality

  • The need to be in control

  • Lack of coping strategies

  • Lack of boundaries

Writing down this list started to bring back my reflux. Yes, yes, yes, and more yesses. The application for medical school should come with a warning like cigarettes do

“Warning: All the skills necessary to succeed in training and the work environment we’ll put you in may cause burnout.”

Luckily I’ve made enough changes and invested in my personal development and self care that I don’t dwell in the depths of burnout like I once did. I enjoy going in to work each day almost as much as I love playing with my kids and hanging out with my hubby.

Do you have one or more of these causes of burnout and want to try to prevent burnout? Do you have these causes of burnout and are suffering from burnout? My program can help

you reduce the personal and lifestyle causes of burnout, and help you identify which workplace factors contributing to your burnout are under your control (you’d be surprised at how many you CAN influence!)
